Micro Charges

Micro-charges can burn through your budget: watch out for the subscription trap.

It’s hard to avoid subscriptions in today’s digital economy. Who hasn’t used streaming services, fitness, dating, or learning apps, cloud storage, retail memberships like Amazon prime, meal kits, or even subscription boxes like FabFitFun, BarkBox, and Stitch Fix?

Each one of these seems harmless, often costing “just” $9.99/month, but these “micro-charges” can really wreck your budget. For example, if you have five subscriptions at $9.99 each, that adds up to $500 a year.

Let me explain the psychology behind subscription pricing: small monthly fees don’t feel like a big deal, especially when compared to larger one-time purchases. So in a way you get tricked into thinking you’re making an affordable purchase. But when you add in auto-renewals, free trials and the frictionless nature of digital payments – it’s easy to lose track of how much you’re actually spending.

You have to be really careful with subscriptions because unlike a physical purchase, they’re invisible.  You pay for access, not for ownership, and often for services you barely use.

The best thing you can do is regularly check or audit all your subscriptions. You need to ask yourself if you use a service enough to justify the cost. Check if you can pause or cancel the subscription without penalty. Look around for a cheaper alternative.

By staying alert to the subscription trap, you can reclaim control over your money.
